SOCIAL ACTION IN PULICAT LAKE AREA.

Work in Pulicat began in 1984 when CReNIEO, initiated a cyclone relief and rehabilitation programme. In 1987 a large scale socio economic study related to the marginalization of the Fisher folk community was undertaken. Based on the recommendation a development plan was initiated, which gradually transformed into the Integrated Fisherfolk Development Project (IFDP). The project’s programmes consisted of building women's leadership, health, fisherfolk rights, income generating skills training and formal education. The project covers 39 villages in Tamil Nadu. The target beneficiaries are marine and lake fishing communities and agricultural communities. Besides this, a formal English medium school called the Pulicat National Matriculation School was established in 1988. In all villages where the project had intervened, village development groups have been nurtured and strengthened and today they are taking active measures to raise the quality of life in their community.
