To
achieve improved individual self-sustainability and
self-esteem, an emphasis on education and training
is essential. Therefore, as each aspect of the Pulicat
Lake Mission's program develops, relevant education
and training programs are created and made available
to the community.
Clearly, an essential aspect of each project is the
education and training component. In order to make
certain that each community member understands the
reasons for putting programs in place.
A major focus of the Mission is
"structured" educational development for both children
and adults incorporating available local resources such as library and school resources. In
addition, the "training the trainer' approach is basic
to assuring that the local community is eventually
in control of its own destiny.
Public Health
Since
one of the objectives is the well being of both the
individual and community, public health education
and programs are essential. Some of the issues that the Mission will focus are adding ICT enabled services for basic
preventive medicine, implementing of public health
teaching for local medical personnel, ensuring that
basic relevant public health issues in each community
are identified and programs promoted to provide solutions.
Housing/Shelter
For
people to successfully participate in community development
activities and ultimately in the education and training
available to them, suitable shelter must be provided.
Various Governmental and Nongovernmental agencies
and the communities will work to accomplish the goal
of creating acceptable housing for each individual
or family.
Renewable Energy
All community activities require power, which, particularly
in Pulicat Lake area, is not normally available. To address
this need while considering the impact on the local
ecology, Pulicat Lake Mission promotes the use
of renewable energy such as solar energy. The renewable energy approach
has the flexibility and resource potential to provide
available, low-cost energy for the community.
For such a challenge as this-ensuring that rural communities
have the energy to power all activities--IREDA, a
company which installs solar panels in rural areas
together with micro-business training to develop small,
local businesses, will be worked out as a pilot project to achieve the proliferation
of renewable energy installations to power all homes,
facilities, telecommunications--wherever there is
an energy requirement.
