Academic Research

The Centre for Research on New International Economic Order (CReNIEO) established in 1979, has been engaged in developing and implementing rural development models beginning at the community level with a view to handle the fundamental factors of rural poverty. CReNIEO believes that the Gandhian model of development could ideally be the tool to ensure the quality of life in India for the rural masses.

Dr.K.Rajaratnam, its founder – director since inception, is recognized internationally for his vision and contribution to research and action in development Economics. The broad objective of CReNIEO for 25 years has been socially relevant action research, applying research and study towards the development of the underprivileged communities in rural India.

As an academic institute, CReNIEO is recognized by the University Grants Commission as a Research Centre for Ph.D studies. It is affiliated to the University of Madras for Ph.D studies in Economics, History, Sociology and Education, and to the Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli, for Ph.D studies in Economics. CReNIEO is also affiliated to University of Madras for M.Phil studies in Economics with Environmental Economics as a special paper.

VISION & MISSION STATEMENT
The Centre for Research on New International Economic Order (CReNIEO) is committed to the total development encompassing the economically poor and socially weaker sections of rural Indian society. Special focus is on women and children belonging to the fisher folk, dalit and tribal communities. CReNIEO’s development plans include promoting better health, proper education, skills for natural resource management and entrepreneurial skills for economic self-reliance. Community action for social change is the key tool in the armory of development methodology, while gender equity and environmental care are the umbrellas for sustaining the development of people living in and around lake regions and forest areas, who are basically the target group in CReNIEO’s scheme of development.

RATIONALE FOR RESEARCH

In pursuit of this ideology CReNIEO is committed to a research programme with the following objectives:

To take up socially relevant research
To follow - up research with social action programmes
To train young men and women in research and action and orient their research to development concerns, especially of the poor in India

The study of development problems involves an interdisciplinary, socio – economic, political, cultural and technological approach.
